zSpace Experience

The Project

One of our key sales demo was in dire need of a major facelift. This particular demo was the face of the company. The beauty of it was that it displayed many unique ways to use the zSpace system, and it really showed off its potential. zSpace Experience had 5 very different scenes targeting different fields in the industry: Medical, Mechanical, e-commerce, architecture, and science.

My Role

Working closely with the Art Director, tackling the medical and mechanical scenes, responsible for the full visual reconstruction on both scenes from concept to finish. Also took part in collaborating on the main hub for zSpace Experience.

Technical Challenges

The heart in the medical scene and the robotic arm in the mechanical scene were incredibly dense. The geometry was distorted in some areas. Fixing this was problematic and time consuming.

The Process

Right off the bat the original medical scene was very boring and users had difficulties understanding what to do. Hearts were more interesting than lungs due to the abundance of detail. We decided to go with a surgical setting with the heart out on a medical tray. The issue here was all of the props on the table which were not intractable and distracting from the hero of the scene. The heart itself was coming off as too small and far away. It didn't feel like it was the center of attraction. After many iterations we decided to strip everything and just have a large scaled heart sitting at zero parallax. This way we were able to achieve depth and make it appear more interesting.

The mechanical scene was visually unappealing and in the wrong setting. The original concept was to have the entire scene set up in a lab. I quickly realized that the lab was looking empty without props yet I couldn't include props knowing it would distract users from the hero of the scene. After some iteration I ended up going with a factory workbench setting.

The last scene was the main hub and we tackled it as team. We needed a new theme that could tie the rest of the scenes together. We wanted customers and enthusiasts to be able to explore and have fun. A park setting seemed to work perfectly in this case. My focus for scene was all around the game board which took reference from the movie "Jumanji". The game board would have figurines representing each scene. The idea was users could pick up the pieces and toss them in the animated portal at the center of the game board, allowing one to jump to each scene separately.
